Provide a summary of the project or program:
ICEI created and launched Shreveport BizCamp in 2001 to service the Shreveport-Bossier City area. BizCamp is an intensive entrepreneur training and life skills program designed to expose low-income, at-risk students living within the inner city of Shreveport, Louisiana and surrounding area to the idea of forming a successful business. BizCamp is designed to teach inner city youth how to create and operate a micro-business enterprise developed from their hobbies or some other creative talent. Inner-city and at risk youth learn the necessary skills to handle all facets of business ownership that will allow them to revitalize their community.
The BizCamp (NFTE) teaching module was created in 1988 by Dr. Steve Mariotti, the visionary who founded The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The NFTE teaching model is designed to provide entrepreneurial education to low-income youth from marginalized communities and igniting the entrepreneurial mindset and talents that already existed within them. The NFTE teaching model is approved by the Louisiana Department of Education.
BizCamp is presently a joint collaboration among ICEI, local universities, Caddo Parish Schools and Shreveport Job Corp Center. This collaboration provides critical thinking in the area of math, science and business through entrepreneurship and life skills training.
Students utilize specially designed Microsoft state of the art on-line interactive software and NFTE instructional materials. Students take a pre-test and post-test to evaluate their progress; students learn to develop their own business plan (BizPlan) and present it to a panel of volunteer local business owner judges via a PowerPoint presentation; and student are given seed money to create a small table-top business and compete at the BizCamp Markertplace.
The two week intense curriculum includes classroom and computer lab instruction; guest speakers; field trips, BizPlan competition, Young Entrepreneur Market Place (YEMP) and graduation ceremony.
