As near-peer mentors, AmeriCorps members play a pivotal role in helping students form developmental relationships, improve readiness to learn and promote school-wide conditions for learning. AmeriCorps members are trained to provide holistic, data-driven support delivered through a youth development lens designed to support students’ success inside and outside the classroom.

Additionally, as a double bottom line organization, City Year New Orleans provides an invaluable career development experience for our 30 AmeriCorps members—over 80% of whom are from the Greater New Orleans area and go on to join the local workforce after their year of service. Each year, our AmeriCorps members complete 340 hours of professional workforce development training and gain 1,400 hours of hands-on, collaborative work experience in the schoolhouse.

They also strengthen their civic responsibility by contributing more than 20 weekend and after-school service hours at food banks, school supply drives, neighborhood clean-ups, recycling programs, and other community initiatives.
