Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Garon Paul Atkinson Lewis Foundation seeks to change the community we serve. Our mission is to serve youth and families by providing counseling, mentoring, skill building and educational services in a safe environment to support the development of their future. Our vision is to improve the lives of youth, families, and communities suffering from oppression, poverty, and violence.
New Iberia Teen Court serves as a diversion program for youth offenders. Teen Court accepts real cases of juvenile delinquency to be heard in a court of their peers. Offenders will have the opportunity to receive a trial of their peers, have a voice and to have the offense removed from their record. Youth Volunteers act as court officials during a real sentencing trial for first time misdemeanor offenders. Students will serve as attorneys, bailiffs, clerks, jurors, and judges and work together to determine a sentence for the defendant. Through Teen Court we hope to expose our student volunteers to the processes of the judicial system giving them a better understanding of the process. We also hope to inspire all youth involved to take pride and find joy in participating in government at all levels. Through Teen Court volunteers and participants will be exposed to a variety of programs and opportunities to support their educational and social growth. These programs include mentoring, counseling and rehabilitation services, technology, educational services, college tours and scholarships. We want to expose the juveniles to a positive environment so they can build resilience and continue stability for a promising future. The program structure and focus on peer justice has proven effective among juvenile delinquents. Teen Court overall success is decreasing the amount of juveniles that become repeat offenders.
