Provide a summary of the project or program:
This project is a proposed 21st century museum in Pierre Part celebrating Cajun culture and the unique environment that is interwoven with Cajun life. The museum site can be developed in functional phases which will allow for the museum to be open to the public in functional phases before the entire museum is completed. Instead of one building, a series of pavilions (small shed-like structures) linked together within the natural environment. We propose a linear arrangement of beads on a necklace,
held together with a “string” of mostly raised walkways passing around and under the cypress trees and across the water. As an example, consider a pavilion or shed devoted to the work of Adam Morales, as moss picker and artist, from which (through a carefully placed large window) one or more cypress trees are seen growing in the water outside, with Spanish moss hanging from their branches. The pavilions will create an alternating rhythm of focus on a chosen subject, followed by direct experience of the
swamp, followed by a pavilion with another chosen subject, followed again by focus on the swamp. The experience of each pavilion becomes enriched and strengthened by the experience of the natural setting. We propose to achieve the emotional, learning, social and financial goals of the museum not through conventional isolation of exhibition content within an enclosing unitary structure that could be anywhere, but through a linear sequence of exhibition experiences that make continuous reference to the surrounding place. We propose to create a unique and memorable village in the swamp. The Museum should also provide visitors with opportunities to explore the swamp environment beyond the pavilions. This will start with walkways that lead to more varied areas of the surrounding swamp. The adjacent borrow pond has richly varied natural conditions including island formations of cypress trees, resident alligators and bird rookeries to be explored by boat from a museum dock. This will allow boat excursions
to be an important part of the museum experience. Furthermore, larger boats for even longer trips and more substantial programs could be operated by the Museum, or for the museum by affiliates, from one or more docks on Belle River or on Lake Verret. Corporate private donations along with fundraisers will assist with local funds. Providing a Cajun Heritage experience will become stronger with our partnership between Museum and Veterans Park Pierre Part Bayou Trails completing in early 2023. The
economic impact will provide new jobs, increased income, and build tourism for this rural community of Assumption Parish. The project is also requesting $250,000 for operating expenses for 2023.
