Provide a summary of the project or program:
Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) is a nonprofit organization committed to serving youth and adult survivors of sexual trauma and building institutional capacity to prevent and respond responsibly to sexual violence in the community. This request for funding is to provide necessary programmatic and operating support to STAR to allow our staff to continue to respond to the increased need from survivors at our agency. STAR prides itself on its ability to provide advocacy, counseling, and legal services at no cost to survivors and necessary operating dollars will let STAR provide holistic care and shift funding to meet the needs of STAR’s clients across the 15 parishes we serve: Ascension, Avoyelles, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Grant, Iberville, Jefferson, Livingston, Orleans, Pointe Coupee, Rapides, St. Tammany, Vernon, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana. Services to survivors include operation of a 24/7 crisis hotline, 24/ hospital accompaniment during forensic medical exams, accompaniment to criminal justice interviews and court proceedings, individual and group counseling, and legal representation in matters resulting from a sexual assault. In addition to STAR’s critical services to survivors, we also provide evidence-based prevention programming to youth and young adults. We are working to not only respond to survivors, but to create protective factors in our communities by educating youth on consent and healthy relationships. We collaborate with organizations to try to prevent sexual trauma before it happens. This funding would also assist with the expansion of our social change program, supporting the program to have a greater and wider reach.

          Operating Services. . . . $75,000
          Other Charges. . . . . . . $0

Does your organization have any outstanding audit issues or findings?  No

If 'Yes' is your organization working with the appropriate governmental agencies to resolve those issues or findings?
          Not Applicable

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
This funding would allow STAR to continue providing our crucial services to more individuals in need as well as expand STAR’s ability to provide youth and community education. Due to decreases in local and federal funding sources, STAR is at risk of eliminating staff and programs, compromising our ability to meet our mission of supporting survivors of sexual trauma, improving systems response, and creating social change to end sexual violence.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The goals of this program are 1) to ensure continuation of STAR’s services to sexual assault survivors in need and 2) increasing community education within STAR’s 15-parish service area. The first goal will be achieved through retaining current staff who are providing these necessary direct survivor services and maintaining agency operations. The second goal will be achieved by hiring a prevention educator to build capacity within the social change program, establish relationships with potential community partners, and facilitate educational workshops to build protective factors in our service parishes.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           12 months
