Greater Shreveport Chamber

Provide a summary of the project or program:
In 1920 after nearly 30 years of effort, the people of Shreveport dedicated funds to build the Shreve Memorial Library at 400 Edwards Street. Opened in 1923, the building served the community as the main library until 1980.
In 1982, the Greater Shreveport Chamber partnered with the City of Shreveport to renovate the building and to lease it as the home for the Chamber. Opened in 1983, the building has served the Chamber for 40 years.
By 2021 the building experienced physical and system failures that, unless addressed, would compromise the integrity of the building. In order to save this important historic structure, the Chamber agreed to take ownership of the building and to raise funds to renovate it. The Chamber is now working to preserve the historic character of this 100-year-old building, update its interior to better serve as a meeting and event center and to serve as an example and a catalyst for revitalization in Downtown Shreveport.
The project will include refurbishment of the cornice and exterior brickwork, replacement of the tile and flat roof, HVAC systems, elevator and windows. The original lobby will be restored, and the large meeting rooms will be renovated and updated with new technologies. The downstairs kitchen area will be upgraded to better support event catering, a multi-media studio will be installed to facilitate audio and video production and the office spaces will be refreshed. Finally, the exterior plaza and landscaping will be transformed to restore a park-like setting to one of the few remaining greenspaces in downtown.
To ensure that these restoration efforts are sustained, a building endowment has been established and will be funded to provide ongoing resources for building maintenance, repair, and updates for the foreseeable future.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $5.5M including the endowment. To date $1.8M has been raised including capital outlay funds secured to support the window and elevator replacements. The project has also been approved for historic tax credits.
As of June 2025, the roof has been replaced and the upper cornice repaired, the water intrusion in the basement has been abated with improved drainage, the damaged basement office space has been demolished and the first phase of the landscaping has been completed. The elevator, meeting room HVAC and window replacements are all in the design phase.
There is much left to be done including interior renovation, such as outfitting the reclaimed lower meeting space, restoration of the original lobby, installation of first floor restrooms, updates to the meeting rooms and renovations of the office, and lower level restroom spaces, as well as the addition of a warming kitchen and studio space.
Additional funding is needed to accomplish these renovations and we are actively seeking private, grant and public funds.
