Provide a summary of the project or program:
LA ranks 6th nationally for new invasive cancer diagnoses and 8th for cancer related deaths. Annually, 26,491 citizens (14,165 men & 12,326 females) will need extensive cancer treatments with 9,345 (5,042 men & 4,303 females) losing their lives. Most frequently diagnosed are prostate (14.4%), breast (13.9%), lung (13.3%), colorectal (9.1%), and kidney (4.7%) cancers.
Founded over six decades ago, CALA (formerly known as the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans) currently provides essential services and products to approximately 7% of LA cancer patients, primarily in 23 parishes in the greater NO and BR areas. CALA furnishes transportation, gas cards, nutritional supplements, healthy meals & medical supplies, so patients may complete treatment while avoiding financial instability and other barriers to treatment.
Increasing patient referrals from health care institutions, social workers and patient navigators from the other 41 “non-funded” parishes have prompted CALA’s expansion with a goal of assisting at least 10% of all newly diagnosed LA cancer patients each year.
Due to a dearth of locations, patients in rural areas suffer the most hardship getting to and from cancer treatment and radiation centers. Access to cancer treatments forces arduous, sometimes daily, journeys for care, causing disruptions to employment, children’s school attendance, extracurricular activities, and college plans. LA’s high poverty rate in rural areas is an obvious contributing factor to access to and completion of cancer care.
The harsh reality is that without CALA’s assistance, many patients will refuse certain cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, and instead choose invasive surgeries with life-long side effects and/or disfigurement. Even worse, without CALA’s assistance, some patients will simply stop their treatments leading to almost certain death from a survivable cancer.
There are many early detection and screening programs in LA, but removing barriers to treatment is critically lacking. CALA ‘s number one priority is unique - to provide access to care and improve the quality of life for vulnerable cancer patients. This will save lives.
In 2026, our state of Louisiana appropriated $50,000 to us (the Cancer Association of Louisiana aka Greater New Orleans) to provide services to cancer patients across the state. After searching, Louisiana is one of only a handful of states that see food insecurity and transportations as essential medical interventions because a patient cannot cure their cancer if they cannot afford the ride to the clinic or the nutrition to survive the chemotherapy. To address the severe barriers of rural poverty and distance to care, CALA is requesting a $50,000 legislative appropriation to provide immediate food and transportation assistance to an additional 300 cancer patients across all 64 parishes. Any additional funding would increase our reach across the state.
The Crisis: Louisiana has the 8th highest cancer mortality rate in the country, severely exacerbated by vast geographic distances to treatment centers.
• The Financial Toxicity: Non-medical barriers are the #1 reason patients miss treatments. Cancer patients face an average of $210+ per month in out-of-pocket travel expenses, forcing impossible trade-offs between groceries, fuel, and medical care.
• The Solution: CALA is requesting $50,000/year to scale direct essential services.
• Immediate Impact: Absorbs travel and food burdens for an additional 300 cancer patients across all 64 parishes.
• The Vision: Solidifies a state-wide infrastructure to systematically protect 10% of Louisiana's cancer population (~2,600 patients annually).

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
To meet the increasing needs of cancer patients throughout the state of Louisiana who are unable to complete their cancer treatment due to poverty, lack of transportation, food insecurity, and geographical distance from cancer treatment centers. CALA currently provides essential services and products to 10% of cancer patients who reside in 23 parishes in the greater New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. CALA’s expansion program will reach an additional 10% of Louisiana citizens diagnosed with cancer in 41 parishes outside of those currently funded. The ultimate goal is to make sure that vulnerable patients though out the state are able to complete their cancer treatments and reduce Louisiana’s high mortality rate.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
To achieve our goal, we will incur the following additional costs:
Gas Cards for Transportation, Nutritional supplements and frozen meals $50,000
Goal:
To meet the increasing needs of cancer patients throughout the state of Louisiana who are unable to complete their cancer treatment due to poverty, lack of transportation, food insecurity, and geographical distance from cancer treatment centers.
Objectives:
To increase our assistance steadily over the next 5 years to a yearly average of 10% of Louisiana’s newly diagnosed cancer population.
To create a statewide men’s health initiative to focus on cancer more prevalent in men and the importance of preventative screenings.
To provide 4000 additional shipped meals to cancer patients statewide.
To provide 400 gas cards to enable transportation to and from cancer treatment centers.
To increase relationships with cancer treatment teams throughout the state to assure that Louisiana’s most vulnerable patients are referred to CALA for essential services.
In 2026 we began working with Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation to create a resource page for all cancer patients to be able to research and educate themselves and their family on state resources and mental health. We continue to update that form. In 2026 we also added to our programs with LSU Health Science Center - Rural Cancer Survivorship. This along with the Colorectal, Cancer Survivorship and Breast/Cervical programs will bring more awareness and access to the Louisiana population.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
9-12 months to reach an additional 300 cancer patients bringing our 2027 and then 2028 patient count to 2400. With our 5 year goal of 2600 louisiana cancer patients served
