What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. We want to offer our athletes another level of physical fitness that they may not receive elsewhere and to enhance their quality of life! 50% more Special Olympics athletes have jobs than those not in Special Olympics. We want to change attitudes of individuals about persons with intellectual disabilities, teaching them the diverse gifts of everyone no matter the abilities.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Special Olympics will offer annually approximately 100 competitive events where athletes can showcase their talents. More than 55 training schools will be conducted to teach individuals in the community to become Special Olympics coaches. SOLA will provide training for key leaders in the organization. SOLA will conduct 6 Healthy Athlete programs where athletes receive FREE health promotion, dental, hearing, and vision screenings. We will continue to reach new Young Athletes providing early intervention for children ages 2-7 with low motor abilities. We wish to offer the SOLA opportunity to the other 124,247 persons in LA with intellectual disabilities who are not yet being offered the opportunity through a media campaign. We will take Special Olympics into as many school systems as possible, approximately 188 schools and 9 colleges, working with the Department of Education. SO Get Into It (SO Get Into It TM) is a free service-learning curriculum for all grade levels (regular education students) that celebrates the diverse gifts of every student, whatever his or her ability. The materials are designed as a relatively simple way to achieve several closely related student learning goals. SO Get Into Wm’ involves students in learning about those who are different but who can nonetheless inspire the world with the lesson that we all have gifts to contribute no matter what our limitations. Unified Sports teams will be formed which pairs SOLA athletes with non-handicapped individuals in the community on sports teams.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
