Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Iberville Museum Association respectfully requests a grant of $6,000 from the Louisiana State Legislature grants for Non-government Organizations. With the proposed NGO grant, Iberville Museum will purchase storage furniture and preservation supplies to rehouse the books and paper items within its permanent collection. The grant will also support the hiring of a part-time collections management intern to assist in the development of a catalog system that will elevate the management of the collection and upload our collection to the Louisiana Digital Library database. The primary goal of the project is to develop and improve the care of our collections and ensure their accessibility to the broader public.

The books and paper items to be rehoused may be classified into four main categories: books, maps, documents, and photographs. Materials such as mat board, corrugated e-flute board, archival tissue and sleeves, and document boxes will be used to construct enclosures for the largest portion of the museum’s collection that needs the most attention.

The collections of the Iberville Museum Association celebrate the cultural heritage and history of Iberville Parish. Funds from the grant will be used to contribute to the Louisiana Digital Library, an online library containing photographs, maps, manuscripts materials, books, oral histories, and other items that document the history and culture of Louisiana. This will make our collection more accessible to the broader public and preserve the items in a digital format.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Since its founding in 2000, the Iberville Museum has been dedicated to preserving and promoting Iberville Parish’s heritage and culture. Throughout the years the institution has collected a strong and unique collection related to the early settlement of the parish, life and industry along the Mississippi River, Iberville Parish military veterans, and the Atchafalaya Basin. These collections are not only an asset to those who live in the State of Louisiana, but to the nation as a whole as they educate the general public about the power of objects, such as photos, documents, art, clothes, and household items, as vehicles of memory and promote greater levels of skill in the preservation of history.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Preservation procedures have been applied sporadically over the years, and no clear guidelines existed when new items were accessioned into the collection. This has resulted in inadequate housing and display conditions for a large portion of the collection. For example, the large and significant collection of historical photographs of the city of Plaquemine and Iberville Parish remains in cardboard boxes or were placed in matting and stacked on top of each other. Furthermore, items on display have not been rotated according to a schedule. Since the recent hire of a new curator, tremendous strides have been made, but preservation issues are ongoing and need to be constantly addressed, with long-term collections care plans.

The Museum’s primary goals are to preserve its existing permanent collection properly and to create better accessibility and visibility for its collection. Iberville Museum’s permanent collection is a tremendous community resource that is under-utilized due to a lack of collection gallery space, limited physical accessibility to the collection spaces, and little published material on the collection. Since there is relatively limited access to the collection, digitizing the collection will make it widely accessible through the Louisiana Digital Library, aiding in teaching, research, audience building, and new scholarship.

As a result of this project, the collection will be properly preserved and maintained, according to collections management guidelines, and the public will have access to the most historically significant items the museum owns.
