BRG requests funding to support the expansion of its Regional Burn Center, which is embarking on plans to optimize the patient and family experience - from the time of the emergency, throughout intensive care, treatment, rehabilitation, recovery and survivorship. The plans include doubling the size of our burn ICU rooms to create more room for families and equipment, increasing the size of the tub room to allow for better temperature control and more capacity to do in-room procedures, adding new step-down room for patients, adding a playroom for children, creating new space for fast-track patients who come in through the ER, and renovating the outpatient rehab gym and treatment center where patients continue their recovery after discharge.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
One of only 68 verified burn centers in the U.S., Baton Rouge General's Regional Burn Center (RBC) provides the highest level of care for burn patients from emergency through rehabilitation. The RBC provides advanced, comprehensive burn care to more than 90% of the region’s patients who have suffered some of life’s most tragic accidents. The Center is housed at Baton Rouge General, in the area’s only A-rated hospital for patient safety for eight years running (The LeapFrog Group, 2012-2019) and in a facility ranked among the top 5% of safest hospitals in the country (Healthgrades, 2016, 2017, 2018) and the top 2% of hospitals in the country for overall medical care
(Carechex, 2016, 2017). Nestled along Baton Rouge’s 1-10/12 interstate in the heart of the petrochemical corridor, with no other
verified regional burn center equipped to provide this level of care within a 300 mile radius, the majority of its patients have suffered
from flame, scaled, electrical or petrochemical/industrial accidents, and more than 45% of burn center patients have Medicaid.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
BRG's goal is to optimize the experience for burn patients and their families. Burn patients are routinely in the hospital for 45 days or more, and their care is highly specialized, requiring ongoing surgical care, nutritional support, social services and therapeutic interventions. Our plans include doubling the size of our burn ICU rooms to create more room for families and equipment, increasing the size of the tub room to allow for better temperature control and more capacity to do in-room procedures, adding new step-down room for patients, adding a playroom for children, creating new space for fast-track patients who come in through the ER, and renovating the outpatient rehab gym and treatment center where patients continue their recovery after discharge.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           12-18 months
