Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Center for Innovation will be a healthcare infrastructure asset for the state that will help establish the region as a hub for healthcare innovation. The Center will serve as the hub for innovationOchsner (iO), an innovation lab Ochsner formed in 2015. iO uses technology and data to create patient-centered solutions to keep patients healthier and providers more efficient. For example, iO pioneered new digital medicine programs that have dramatically improved health outcomes for patients with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure. Through the Optimal Hospital Initiative, iO is using new technologies to improve health outcomes in the in-patient setting.
The Center for Innovation will be approximately 22,500 sq/ft and will be built on approximately one acre of land owned by Ochsner. To fund planning and construction, Ochsner will contribute $4.3 million, GE Healthcare will invest $400,000, and the federal Economic Development Administration will invest $1.5 million. Requested capital outlay funds would be used for planning and construction. Ochsner will fund FF&E, IS, and all other expenses associated with Center.
The Center for Innovation will: be a catalyst for job creation and private investment in the Jefferson Highway Economic Development District and the Greater New Orleans region; establish the region as a hub for healthcare innovation; and provide job training and job placement opportunities for residents in the surrounding distressed community.
It will also be: a destination for the development, testing, and implementation of innovative healthcare solutions with a focus on digital health and precision medicine; and a state-of-the-art space for partners to collaborate, co-develop, pilot and validate solutions with access to Ochsner’s world-class physicians and diverse patient population.
Key Components of the Center include: a makerspace, where new technologies can be created; a prototype lab, featuring a full-scale mock hospital room, waiting room, and exam room where new technologies can be tested; flexible office space for visiting partners and digital health technology companies; and a training center to host national and local conferences and community events, including job trainings, business assistance programs, and educational seminars. The Center will serve as the headquarters for iO and its team of product engineers, data analysts, physicians, nurses, health coaches, and technicians. Regional Partners include the five leading economic development organizations: The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO), Greater New Orleans Inc. (GNO, Inc.), the New Orleans BioInnovation Center, Idea Village, and Propeller.
In a feasibility study of the Center, GNO Inc. noted that at critical stages in their growth, new companies in the region lack access to testing grounds for their innovations. The Center will be a bridge for these new companies by providing access to Ochsner’s physicians, patients and facilities.
The Center will generate job and training opportunities in a distressed community. The per capita income for Residents in Block 1, Census tract 247 is $16,868. The Center will transform a surface parking lot into a Center for Innovation in an area in need of investment.
The Center will accelerate innovationOchsner's progress in using technology and data to create patient-centered, precision-focused solutions to keep patients healthier and providers more efficient. These healthcare breakthroughs benefit people of all genders, ages, races and socio-economic statuses, but they are of particular benefit to underserved individuals.
