Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Algiers Economic Development Foundation respectfully requests funding to cover payroll costs and operating expenses for the Algiers Career and Educational Development Program (ACED) and the work of the organization as a whole to support small businesses, build a sustainable local economy, and create a thriving community in Algiers.

The ACED program, in its second year, offers an opportunity to develop job readiness skills such as resume writing and job interviewing to juniors and seniors who live or attend school in Algiers. ACED students are also given the opportunity to shadow or intern at an Algiers-based business, or with a professional from the Algiers community in their post-graduation field of interest. Our goal is to offer local students exposure to diverse career pathways in our own community, including information about post-high school educational programs at Algiers-based schools.

In addition to workforce development, AEDF offers direct support services to local businesses and those hoping to do business in Algiers. AEDF’s business retention and expansion program (BRE) focuses on site visits and direct contact to at least 50 Algiers-based businesses each year. More personal contact with our local businesses allows AEDF to tailor support, and each year 1,000 emails are sent with specific, personalized opportunities with organizations like Fund 17, LED, the City of New Orleans, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

In addition to supporting existing businesses, AEDF works to grow our local entrepreneurial community. Our recent Algiers Small Business Survey found that over half of Algiers businesses own their commercial property, and many hope to grow or move to owner-owned space in the next year. Working with commercial real estate lenders, brokers, and agents, we help connect our diverse community of entrepreneurs with support to grow and thrive.

On a larger scale, AEDF also works with real estate professionals including site selectors, leasing agents, and colleagues in economic development organizations to raise awareness of the untapped potential of the Algiers community. AEDF hosts site tours, business mixers, and cultural programming such as the Algiers Holiday Bonfire to bring residents and real estate professionals alike to our community to shop at local businesses and learn about development opportunities.

This funding allows our organization to cover payroll costs related to our ACED program coordinator and AEDF program director. Additionally, this funding helps us cover important additional costs such as insurance, utilities, marketing campaigns, and more.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The mission of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation is to build a sustainable, business-friendly environment that grows investments and jobs in Westbank New Orleans through advocacy, marketing, and business development, recruitment, and retention.

The requesting funding allows the Algiers Economic Development Foundation to employ a full time program director and ACED program manager to operate our programming on behalf of our community. It is our intention to provide services to both youth and business owners in Algiers that lead to a more sustainable, equitable, and thriving community. Through the ACED program, this funding will provide operational and payroll resources to offer job skills training to up to twenty juniors and seniors at Algiers high schools or from the Algiers community. By teaching the youth in our community important life skills like how to create a professional resume and cover letter and how to dress and engage in a job interview, we can offer a leg up in the post-high school workforce. These skills will be particularly important as students graduate into the post-COVID world, where access and exposure to opportunities are limited.

The Algiers Economic Development Foundation also serves our local businesses community. These funds will allow us to staff an executive director and program director to oversee the day to day operations of the organization and to run quality programming to ensure our local economy thrives. Funding for crucial nonprofit support expenses like insurance, rent, and utilities allows our staff to operate a professional organization that offers quality engagement and information to our members.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The ultimate goal of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation is to create a sustainable, equitable, and healthy local economy in the Algiers community of New Orleans. Important objectives for achieving this goal include the following: advocating for the needs of local businesses in Algiers when appropriate; hosting two community clean up days per year; hosting quarterly business mixers to encourage learning and networking among business owners; marketing the Algiers community as a whole to encourage residents from across the region to visit local businesses; engaging our youth to prepare for jobs in our local economy; understanding the needs of local businesses through surveys and qualitative interviews; and engaging developers and real estate professionals to invest in our community.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
