Provide a summary of the project or program:
More fun for more kids with special needs!

MedCamps of Louisiana holds a series of one-week, fun-filled camps each summer free of charge for children living with a variety of chronic illnesses, physical and cognitive disabilities. These include spina bifida, cerebral palsy, asthma, sickle cell anemia, autism, epilepsy, juvenile diabetes, orthopedic conditions, visual impairments, hearing impairments, speech impairments, cognitive disabilities and cancer survivors.

Children battling these disorders are often unable to participate in typical childhood activities. Consequently, they are often “left out” because they have special needs. With MedCamps that is no longer the case!

A different camp each week:
Every week during the summer a different camp is held. Each session of camp is designed specifically for a particular type of chronic illness or disability – and includes appropriate health professionals, specially trained staff and tailored activities. (Prior to camp, each parent/guardian is responsible for providing the camp office with the details of their camper’s medical management program as prescribed by the camper’s physician).

At camp the focus is on what campers can do, and all campers are challenged and encouraged to reach their full potential. In the safe environment of MedCamps, surrounded by other children with similar challenges, these special campers discover they are not alone and gain a genuine sense of belonging, accomplishment and self – worth.

Where is all the fun located?
MedCamps of Louisiana’s summer camps are held each year at Camp Alabama. Camp Alabama is a property of the Presbytery of the Pines and operated in partnership with MedCamps of Louisiana. Camp Alabama is an 80 acre wooded paradise, located in the rolling hills of North Central Louisiana between Monroe and Ruston. It features comfortable accommodations, paved pathways, a beautiful lake with canoes and paddleboats and wonderful facilities including a wheelchair accessible swimming pool and zipline. Activities include fishing, boating, arts and crafts, archery, nature hikes, music, drama, canoeing and swimming. Memorable evening activities include camp wide games, karaoke and an end of camp dance. All activities, which may be modified, are supervised by trained camp counselors and appropriate medical professionals.

The entrance to Camp Alabama is located at 136 Hwy 821 in Choudrant, Louisiana which is approximately 4 miles north of Interstate 20 at the Choudrant-Sibley Exit 93.

MedCamps Promise:
At the core of everything we do as an organization is the belief that all people, regardless of special medical, cognitive or physical needs, deserve to experience life to the fullest and that camping is an American tradition which epitomizes normalcy and provides participants with a sense of well-being, belonging, accomplishment and self-worth. In light of these beliefs it is our promise to provide, at no charge, a medically supervised residential summer camping experience that supports growth in the physical, social and emotional aspects of the life of a person living with special needs by developing normalcy, building confidence and fostering independence..

Founded in 1987:
MedCamps of Louisiana was founded in 1987 by Dr. Michael F. Zambie of Monroe. He first camp was a one-week session for 13 children living with asthma and allergies. Today we host camp for kids with 20 or more categories of chronic illnesses, physical and cognitive disabilities
