Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Hazel Hebert Benoit Center for Homemaking Studies is planned for location on the site of a building 501 West Nichols St. in Welsh. This proposal plans to complete renovation of the subject site for establishment of a program to support homemakers. Partial renovation, locally funded, has already been undertaken.
Originally housing the Welsh High School Home Economics Department, the subject site was abandoned following relocation of the High School in 1959. Purchased by family members of Hazel Benoit around 2002, the structure was donated to the Welsh Museum in her memory in 2013. Mrs. Benoit taught Home Economics in Welsh for thirty two years beginning in 1945, changing the lives of thousands of Welsh families.
Renovated, this building is expected to provide a site to help renovate families by providing the support and knowledge required to establish and maintain home living. Skills such as home financial management, cleaning, cooking, self-care, child development, care for the elderly and self care will be targeted from this location. Adjacent to the new Jefferson Davis Parish Library, now under construction, programs at this site can be expected to offer to the community opportunities for skill acquisition that are currently missing from education systems. A discussion of shared opportunities between the library and this cottage has been initiated a recent museum board meeting.
Al representative of the Veterans administration, charged with support of homeless vets recently pointed out an area of need for his clients. Laying out a typical scenario, he described many veterans as people who left their families immediately after High School, having been taken care of by their parents, entered the service where few skills for homemaking are required, then left the service with little knowledge and few skills for establishing a home or family. Supports for these vets and for other groups such as persons leaving foster care, persons who have grown up with addicted parents, and persons with children who have special needs are all seen as candidates for the services that could be made available through this site.
