Provide a summary of the project or program:
A press release from the Louisiana Department of Health revealed that 2020 was the deadliest year for child drownings for our state. Shockingly, there was a 60% increase in drownings for children ages 0 to 14 years old, compared to the year prior.
Additionally, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that:
•Most drownings in Louisiana occur in warmer months and among children aged 1-4.
•Between 2017 and 2019, Louisiana had the fourth-highest drowning rate in the U.S. for children aged 1-14.
•Drowning remains the third leading cause of injury-related death for Louisiana children ages 0–14, following motor vehicle crashes and homicides. Children ages 1–4 are at the highest risk for drowning, making it the leading cause of injury-related death in this age group. The most common risk factors in child drownings include lack of supervision (52%), inability to swim (49%) and absence of proper barriers (38%).
As Lafayette parents who tragically lost our 17 month old daughter, Mazie Leah, to a drowning accident in 2020, we are determined to do whatever it takes to ensure children are safer around water. We implemented Mazie’s Mission, a 501 (c) 3 organization, in 2021 to honor our daughter and to provide education on water safety, advocate for drowning prevention as well as swim resources to children and their families so that everyone receives awareness and has access to learn to swim.
Our primary goal is to prevent as well as reduce the number of drownings, with a focus on children. Specifically, this will include water safety awareness and education through intentional partnerships. This endeavor has no boundaries as drownings can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. We hope to prevent drownings through these goals: providing at least 1,000 sponsorships for swim lessons to underserved communities nationwide, bridging gaps for ethnic groups who do not have access to swim lessons, providing access for survival swim and self-rescue lessons for babies and toddlers, raising awareness with signage near bodies of water with family activity (such as neighborhood and park retention ponds) across the state, offer educational material to medical professionals at pediatric clinics, offer teachers this material to be taught to students, and continue campaign efforts to parents and caregivers nationwide making the layers of prevention known to all. Specifically, this NGO request will assist Mazie's Mission to provide education and awareness throughout Louisiana including materials, campaigns and signs near any body of water that families with young children are often near. To do this and reduce the number of drownings across our state, Mazie’s Mission hopes to partner with the Louisiana Legislature to have the most impact in every region.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The primary purpose of Mazie's Mission is to prevent as well as reduce the number of drownings, with a focus on children. Specifically, this will include water safety awareness and education throughout Louisiana. Specifically with this NGO request, we aim to raise awareness with signage near bodies of water with family activity (such as neighborhood and park retention ponds), offer educational material to medical professionals at pediatric clinics, offer teachers this material to be taught to students, and continue campaign efforts to parents and caregivers nationwide making the layers of prevention known to all. Currently, we have partnerships and signage at public parks with the City of Lafayette, Youngsville and Broussard. We hope to expand these efforts statewide and also include neighborhoods with retention ponds. This request will help fund signage as well as educational material to promote drowning prevention in every region.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Mazie's Mission has the following goals and objectives:
1. To provide educational awareness throughout every community in Louisiana. We will offer educational material and presentation to schools, medical communities and civic groups.
2. To reduce the number of childhood drownings, in hopes of at least 30% with a two year campaign. This will include drowning prevention signage around every public waterway with access to community members.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
1 year
