The century old Strand Theatre of Shreveport, a National Historic Landmark, was rescued from probable destruction, restored and re-opened in 1984 as a non-profit performing arts organization. Listed on the National Historic Register, The Strand is often photographed, filmed for tourism promotions, and toured. Since re-opening, the Strand has played a crucial role in helping to maintain cultural and economic viability in the North Louisiana parishes that she serves. Restoration and repairs will enable The Strand Theatre to continue providing a quality venue for local and touring artists, and for the community, culturally and economically. Funding was first requested in 2007, the needs of The Strand have become critical. The repairs and renovations to The Strand that are needed: 1. Repairs to water/age damage to main structural supports in the grid area of the stage. Masonry work to a main structure wall. 2. Building exterior waterproofing to protect exterior envelope integrity. 3. New HVAC for office building portion. 4. Repair orchestra pit hydraulic system 5. Overhead plaster repair - requires extensive scaffolding. 6.Replace stage flooring - top covering - due to age and water damage. 7. Replacement of the weathered exterior doors and upgrade of closers and hardware on interior doors. 8. Upgrade of Fire Evac System and Controls. 9. Asbestos abatement - backstage stairwell, office stairwell and HVAC house on roof. 10. Electrical needs - upgrade of outside safety lighting. 11. Repair stage fly system. 12. Office building carpet replacement. 13. Enlargement of box office area. 14. Restore the basement Gentlemen’s Smoking Parlor, a historically significant original room that was not touched in the 1980’s restoration. Previous years' requests included replacing the HVAC chiller, restoring gallery floor restrooms, tinting large plate glass windows, replacing all fluorescent building lighting with LED, replacing loading dock door, replacing hearing impaired system, adding handrails in the balconies, replacement of the Stage Fly System ropes, rewiring and lighting of marquee, upgrade and replacement of the elevator, - this work has been completed out of necessity. Also out of necessity, new repairs are required and have been included. The request for 25-26 reflects the work done, the money included in the match, and small disbursements from capital outlay therefore, the request total has changed.

Restoration and repairs will enable The Strand Theatre to continue to provide a historic, quality venue, The State Theatre of Louisiana, for local and touring artists and for the community. The Strand Theatre hires a local professional staff, professional stage crew, and many other Louisiana artists and workers. The Strand offers an annual $3.5 million economic impact on the area, while the cultural impact if immeasurable.
