Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Kemper and Leila Williams Foundation dba The Historic New Orleans Collection is requesting $3 million toward a $28 million capital campaign project to preserve and restore our original campus anchored at 533 Royal Street. This request would constitute approximately 10% of the total cost of the project
The 533 Royal St. campus consists of 7 historic buildings and 5 courtyards, with some buildings dating to the mid-1700s. HNOC’s renovation and construction project aims to make these buildings entirely accessible to the public in a way they have never been before, preserving their historic integrity while ensuring HNOC can accommodate all ages and abilities. The project will also “future-proof” these structures, with major upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as introducing storm-water management and retention solutions. The updated complex will be LEED Silver-certified, an energy and environmental designation belonging to only one other building in the French Quarter - HNOC’s Seignouret-Brulator House on 520 Royal Street.
The renewed campus will include galleries to display unique and priceless holdings related to Louisiana’s pre-colonial, colonial, and American history; public and private event spaces; and an educational facility that will ensure the region’s culture and heritage are passed on to the next generation. Funding from the state will support costs for furniture, fixtures, and equipment expenses associated with the 10+ exhibition galleries on HNOC’s original 533 Royal Street campus, including 9 galleries in the historic Merieult House. Additional funding for the project will leverage existing resources and commitments, including a $10 million match from HNOC’s endowment and board, as well as private donations raised for our capital campaign.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Since its founding in 1966, the Kemper and Leila Williams Foundation has grown the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) into the world’s largest holder of materials relating to the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. Our mission is to steward this history and culture in order that it is accessible for generations to come. HNOC is a free museum, a research center, and a publisher, serving over 300,000 annually through in-person and virtual resources.
Research shows that museums are economic drivers, generating revenue, creating jobs, and providing tax benefits to local and state communities. Positive museum experiences are also correlated with increased economic and community well-being. HNOC currently provides nearly 150 community jobs and injects approximately $20 million into the local economy through annual operational costs - in addition to providing critical historic, cultural, and educational experiences. We were recently profiled in the New York Times as the #1 “key stop” in New Orleans and are listed in TripAdvisor’s Top 20 “Things to Do in New Orleans.”
Upgrades to our buildings, courtyards, and gallery exhibition spaces will allow HNOC to enhance what our supporters love – exciting exhibitions, engaging public programming, and unsurpassed educational supports to local schools and universities – while vastly expanding the number of visitors we can welcome on an annual basis by ensuring those spaces are fully accessible for all ages and abilities.
By restoring and future-proofing these spaces, HNOC will not only be positioned to welcome tens of thousands more visitors to our campus, but we will also strengthen our position as an anchor attraction for the French Quarter and its many museums, increasing tourism and supporting job creation.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
New Orleans and Louisiana should have a world-class museum that serves as a testament to its important national and international history and status. An investment in HNOC is a powerful and critical investment in a shared vision of New Orleans and Louisiana as a premier museum destination in the United States.
HNOC’s goals are to 1) ensure our museum exhibitions are free and accessible to all who wish to learn more about the Gulf South’s diverse history and culture; 2) preserve, renovate, and futureproof our historical structures to make them entirely accessible to all ages and abilities for generations to come; and 3)Welcome 300,000-500,000 in-person visitors annually across HNOC’s campus and 1-2 million people to all French Quarter museums.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
24 months
