Provide a summary of the project or program:
Greaux the Good (GTG) is an agricultural support program for Louisiana Farmers operated by Market Umbrella, the New Orleans non-profit that operates the Crescent City Farmers Markets as well as a number of nutrition incentive and education programs locally and throughout the state. It works by partnering with farmers markets and other direct to consumer outlets (farm stands, CSAs, mobile markets, etc.) enabling them to implement nutrition incentieve programming that increases the purchasing power of low income households by doubling SNAP and FMNP dollars spent at partners. GTG provides technical assistance in FNS authorization (increasing the number of SNAP accepting outlets) and leverages decades of organizational experience in nutrition incentive program operation and guidance for other LA farmers markets to design and implement programs appropriate for their outlet. GTG puts federal nutrition assistance dollars to work - increasing fresh food access for underserved households, increasing income for LA farmers, and circulating those dollars within the local economy for increased economic impact.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Established in 1995, Market Umbrella is a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating the power of farmers markets to drive economic and community health in the region. Its flagship initiative, the Crescent City Farmers Market, operates markets across Orleans Parish, providing fresh, local produce and value-added products for local families and serving as a vital economic support system for farmers in the region.
Since 2008, Market Umbrella has offered Market Match, its nutrition incentive program at these markets. Due to limited capacity and inconsistent funding, similar programming was uncommon across Louisiana. However, with the state’s support in 2022, Market Umbrella developed and launched Greaux the Good, Louisiana’s statewide nutrition incentive program. This initiative now partners with over 20 businesses, including farmers markets, farm stands, and other entities that emphasize Louisiana-grown products.
Market Umbrella seeks to further its mission statewide through Greaux the Good, leveraging state funding to improve the accessibility, availability, and affordability of healthy, local foods. By promoting the spending of food benefit dollars at farm-direct businesses and incentivizing their use, Greaux the Good addresses key issues such as limited access to nutritious food, economic challenges for small-scale specialty crop farmers and food producers, and a fragmented local food system. Through partnerships and nutrition incentives, Greaux the Good is prioritizing Louisiana’s farmers, families, and local economy.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The goals of Greaux the Good are to strengthen Louisiana agriculture and food production, increase access to fresh, local food for low-income Louisianans, improve health outcomes, and enhance the resilience of our local and regional food systems. According to County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 11% of Louisianans have low incomes and live far from a grocery store, limiting their access to healthy foods; this percentage ranges from 0% to 39% across parishes. Additionally, 15% of people in Louisiana lack reliable food sources.

Louisiana is an agricultural state, as highlighted in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, which counted 25,006 farms statewide. While the number of farms has decreased over the years, the state remains a key producer of meat and commodity crops. Specialty crops, however, are crucial for increasing access to fresh, local, and healthy foods that belong on the tables of Louisiana families.

Greaux the Good plays a vital role in connecting these local products with the people who need them most by incentivizing the use of underutilized food benefit dollars. The program promotes the use of federal food benefits with local farmers and agricultural producers, encourages shoppers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, supports small businesses and farmers markets across Louisiana, and strengthens communities statewide.

Greaux the Good provides funding to Louisiana farmers markets, farm stands, and other eligible entities to establish or expand nutrition incentive programs. Eligible and qualified entities approved for partnership enter into an agreement with Market Umbrella to implement a Greaux the Good-funded program. This agreement outlines the terms and conditions for program implementation, funding allocations, reporting requirements, and other partnership specifications. Greaux the Good covers 100% of the direct incentives and supports a portion of the program's administrative costs. To expand our network of partners statewide and achieve our goal of positively impacting all communities through improved food access, Greaux the Good provides technical assistance to help eligible entities qualify for partnership. Additionally, Greaux the Good has addressed many capacity concerns typically associated with this type of programming by offering partners a comprehensive starter kit and developing a program accessible to a diverse range of stakeholders.
