Provide a summary of the project or program:

Teach For America's (TFA) first commitment is to students, ensuring they receive an excellent education they need to succeed. We are a leading source of education leaders, serving as high-dosage tutors, teachers, school administrators, and more - working across the system to expand opportunities for students. Since 1990, TFA has recruited and developed teachers (called "corps members") in Louisiana, helping them grow into strong educators and champions of student success.
Through their time in the classroom, TFA corps members make an initial two-year commitment to teach, gaining firsthand experience while developing a deep understanding of the challenges that impact student success. TFA's mission is to bring high-quality leaders into classrooms, provide coaching and professional development to help them lead their students toward academic growth, and offer leadership opportunities to help educators create lasting improvements in education.
Today, TFA is a national network of over 72,000 leaders whose experience in the classroom fuels a lifelong commitment to expanding educational excellence. In Louisiana, our network includes 360 teachers and over 240 school system leaders, principals, and support staff; 60% of our alumni remain in the education sector, working toward meaningful and lasting change. Over the past 35 years, TFA has remained committed to ensuring that students have access to exceptional teachers.
TFA's core program focuses on several key strategies. TFA actively recruits college graduates, graduate students, and professionals who have demonstrated strong potential to become transformational teachers. Once selected, corps members are matched with schools where they can have the greatest impact. They undergo rigorous teacher preparation through intensive pre-service training that begins in May and through the first days of school.
Pre-service training lays a foundation for teaching by focusing on building community, content, and pedagogical knowledge, equipping corps members to lead rigorous and supportive classrooms by providing a core set of knowledge and skills that position them for continued learning in Louisiana. Pre-service culminates in a Practicum, where new teachers begin working with students, receive coaching and feedback on their planning and delivery, participate in practice lessons, and prepare to lead their own classrooms.
During the school year, TFA provides instructional and leadership coaching centered on observation and feedback, grounded in research-backed education practices. Coaching utilizes the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), a multidimensional observational instrument that focuses on teacher and student interactions to assess classroom quality in instructional support, classroom organization, and student support. Using CLASS and student achievement data, TFA instructional coaches provide year-round professional development that strengthens teachers' pedagogy, instruction, and classroom management. Support includes classroom observations, data analysis, leadership coaching, and targeted training tailored to trends, needs, and grade-level exemplars.
Beyond the classroom, TFA strengthens its alumni network by fostering mentorship and fellowship opportunities, community-building initiatives, and career development programs. Additionally, the organization continues to expand the Ignite high-dosage tutoring model, providing targeted support to help kindergarten- to third-grade students in Louisiana develop critical reading skills. Ignite high-dosage tutoring has been a strong tool to recruit more leaders to apply to be corps members. College students who tutored with Ignite were nearly three times more likely to apply to TFA's teaching corps and Ignite raised applications by 14 percentage points for students outside education fields. Through these efforts, TFA remains dedicated to ensuring students have access to the educators, support, and resources to thrive.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Teach For America (TFA) recruits, selects, trains, and professionally develops outstanding leaders who have demonstrated the values and leadership necessary to expand opportunities for students inside and outside the classroom. TFA supports educators in advancing student academic and personal growth while helping strengthen schools and districts through the leadership of our network. Our organization is the only national talent provider in the education sector uniquely positioned to accomplish key objectives: the ability to annually recruit, train, and support educators (called “corps members”) to teach in schools across Louisiana; a required commitment for corps members to teach for at least two years; a proven track record of teachers who exceed expected impact in their classrooms and meet or exceed school leaders’ expectations; and the ability to develop outstanding leaders dedicated to improving education for future generations.
Since 1990, TFA has recruited over 72,000 exceptional leaders to serve in the education sector and equipped them for a lifetime of impact. Fueled by their experiences in the classroom, TFA alumni continue to lead in various capacities, with, 14,380 serving as teachers, nearly 1,450 as school principals, 1,200 in school system leadership, and thousands more working across sectors to drive meaningful, lasting change.
In Louisiana, we currently place first- and second-year teachers in K-12 public schools in Ascension (specifically Donaldsonville), Orleans, West Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, and St. Bernard Parishes. We prioritize partnerships with schools where at least 80% of students qualify for free and/or reduced-price lunch programs. TFA corps members play a vital role in filling STEM teaching positions, with 47% currently teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. In the 2025 principal survey conducted in partnership with Westat, 93% of principals in Louisiana partner schools reported satisfaction with the performance of our corps members at their schools.
Teach For America’s continued work in Louisiana depends on raising funds to support its operations. Given the unique combination of values, services, and results that TFA provides, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) or appropriations may request up to $2,000,000 in public funding for Teach For America.
In 2024-2025, TFA in Louisiana raised over $5.17 million in private funds for programs and operations; Teach For America has a track record of raising 80-85% of our budget through private funding. Private funds are primarily tied to urban placements, while public funding allows TFA to expand into districts across Louisiana, including rural areas.
This increase in state funding would also translate into a higher return on investment as TFA attracts and retains talent in Louisiana. An economic impact report conducted with Riverbend Research in 2025 found that TFA alumni and current corps members in Louisiana generated income and revenue for Louisiana—with $75M being new income to the state—while also saving the state money and resources. TFA teachers in Louisiana add substantial tax revenue and disposable income, while addressing high-need teaching vacancies that enhance academic outcomes and college readiness and, in turn, driving the economic mobility of Louisiana's students.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Our education system is at a pivotal moment. While challenges in teacher recruitment and retention persist, there is an incredible opportunity to strengthen and reimagine the future of education. Louisiana is continuing to improve the rates of student performance from year to year. Teach For America is proud to be part of this change through our talent recruitment, development and retention in order to build a stronger education system that ensures every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
To drive lasting change, in 2019 TFA has set a bold goal: By 2030, we aim to double the number of children reaching key educational milestones, setting them on a path to success. Achieving this vision requires a collaborative, system-wide approach, working alongside students, educators, and communities. We will use proven indicators to measure progress and ensure long-term academic growth. In Louisiana, our teams are focused on doubling the number of third graders proficient in reading on the LEAP and DIBELS exam.
To accomplish this, we utilize several key strategies. We will continue to recruit and place a strong corps of educators in schools across the state. We will track student achievement metrics for TFA corps members and alumni teachers through an anonymous data-sharing agreement with the Louisiana Department of Education. We will provide Louisiana classrooms with teachers who, on average, drive higher student achievement due to the training and resources they receive through TFA. Additionally, we will expand our support beyond TFA educators to strengthen the broader teaching ecosystem and continue growing Ignite, a high-dosage tutoring model designed to improve reading growth for kindergarten through third-grade students.
Our programs have already demonstrated powerful results. For example, the TFA Coaching Fellowship strengthens teacher effectiveness and retention for both TFA alumni and non-alumni educators. This fellowship provides leadership development for teachers who serve as mentors to novice educators, equipping them with tools, professional development, and ongoing support. In a recent survey, 100% of novice teachers reported receiving high-quality coaching, and every fellow recommended the program. Additionally, 88% of fellows without prior leadership roles earned leadership or teacher-leader opportunities for the 2024-2025 school year.
Another key initiative is the Ignite Fellowship, a national high-dosage tutoring program that enables college students to provide customized, small-group instruction to younger learners. This program directly contributes to our 2030 goal by accelerating reading proficiency and increasing student engagement. Since its launch in 2021, Ignite high-dosage tutoring has demonstrated proven success. In Louisiana, 100% of principals reported positive impact on students’ academic growth and overall engagement in school. For the 2025-2026 school year, Ignite high dosage tutoring has expanded to include over 400 tutors—up from 315 last school year—supporting students in East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Orleans, and Pointe Coupee Parishes, with plans to continue growing in the years ahead. By focusing on these strategies, Teach For America remains dedicated to ensuring that every student has access to excellent educators, the resources they need to succeed, and the support necessary to thrive.
