Provide a summary of the project or program:

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art has submitted a Capital Outlay Request for the purpose of renovations to the historic landmark Patrick F. Taylor Library, designed by Henry H. Richardson, and the modern building, Stephen Goldring Hall, to be used for the public benefit to further research, education and public service and to promote tourism and other economic development in the City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana.
For the Library, funding is sought for infrastructure improvements that allow occupancy permit requirements. Safe and functional use of the building is essential to preserve this historic structure and to revitalize the space into galleries and classrooms.
Taylor Library will ultimately house the pre-20th century portion of the Museum’s collection and the Goldring-Woldenberg Institute for the Advancement of Southern Art and Culture, as well as the Clementine Hunter Education Wing, future home of award-winning educational programs including Pre-K, K-12, summer camps and Teen Docent Program, which was presented the National Art and Humanities Youth Program Award, the Nation's highest honor for after-school arts and humanities programs.
Goldring Hall funding is sought for much needed 25-year maintenance on infrastructure including elevators, fire and life safety, security, HVAC, and roof components. This maintenance will ensure the Museum continues its mission to broaden the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South through permanent collections, exhibitions, educational programs and publications by conserving, exhibiting and interpreting the art, craft and design of the American South within the context of the region's history, culture, music, literature, and culinary heritage.
The Museum has over 60,000 visitors annually, and over 7,000 students participating in docent-led tours and artist programs from the New Orleans metro area and six surrounding parishes with outreach efforts to the under-served children of the area and every school where arts curriculum is being reduced or removed entirely.
Upon completion, the Library will be open to the public as exhibition and classroom space, expanding already successful educational and children’s programs to serve an increased number of students through which to connect to other arts organizations and foundations.
Gaining the occupancy permit will enable the Museum to bring classroom functionality to Taylor Library and connect the annex and rotunda through the passageway to Stephen Goldring Hall. It will enable all buildings to be fully open to the public, energizing growth in numbers of visitors to the Arts Warehouse District – positively impacting museums, galleries, restaurants and hotels – and will increase use of the facility as a revenue-generating event space, a critical part of the Museum’s earned revenues, and to house conferences and an annual symposium which are part of the institution’s overall strategic plan.
