Provide a summary of the project or program:
This request will support a number of projects that are critical to advancing the Museum’s educational mission and sustaining its impact as an economic and tourism driver for Louisiana. The reauthorized Priority 1 funds in this application will support substantial upgrades to the Museum’s original permanent exhibit, The D-Day Invasion of Normandy Galleries, which is now 25 years old. This project is currently under FP&C management and the Grand Opening has been set for June 6, 2027, the 83rd anniversary of D-Day. Reauthorized Priority 1 funds will also support the construction of the Floyd Education & Collections Pavilion, a new two-story building at 1060 Magazine Street that will have state-of-the art fabrication workshops to maintain and develop the Museum’s exhibits, as well as significant display space for visitors to access large-scale artifacts. This project is currently under FP&C management and anticipated to open to the public in 2027.
This application will also support the development and maintenance of the Museum’s overall campus to ensure it continues to deliver a world-class experience to its visitors that educates and inspires. The new Priority 1 funds requested in this application will support the construction of the Sanderson Leadership Center on the second floor of the Floyd Education & Collections Pavilion, including the creative development and fabrication of an innovative and immersive leadership experience to educate thousands of local K-12 students, university students, and major corporate leaders. Funds will also support the design and refresh of the Museum’s original pavilion, Louisiana Memorial Pavilion. Opened 25 years ago, areas throughout and surrounding the 3-story pavilion will be renovated to support increased programming for K-12 teachers and students; complete maintenance, improvement, and life safety projects; and improve emergency power to protect artifacts during a power failure. Funds will also be used for the redesign and renovation of spaces, like the USS Tang and Stage Door Canteen, that could better serve visitors.
Finally, this application supports projects to improve the overall safety, accessibility, maintenance, visitor experience, and operation of the Museum’s campus. It includes the design and construction of projects within US Freedom Pavilion, Campaigns of Courage Pavilion, the third floor of 1040 Magazine Street, 906-922 Magazine Street, 1171 Constance Street, and across the Museum’s 7-acre campus to improve emergency power; enhance infrastructure, exhibit displays, and audio visual presentations; promote life safety; create office space so that it can continue to employ more community members; and expand the Museum’s operations to create a greater economic impact by hosting more rental events and educational programs, accommodating larger groups, and more.
The National WWII Museum has been consistently recognized as the top attraction in New Orleans and one of the world’s leading cultural and educational institutions. To maintain and enhance this prestigious reputation, the Museum must make strategic investments to grow visitation, enrich the visitor experience, and improve the overall safety, accessibility, and operation of its campus. The Museum must continue to maintain and refresh its exhibits and campus to incorporate the latest advances in technology so that the visitors of tomorrow have the same educational and inspiring experience as the 10.5 million visitors that have visited to date.
